Wakatobi is such a remote place, far from just about everywhere, but people go there in search of pristine reefs and a sense of adventure. Our host, Anat, and the camera crew spent two amazing weeks here in one of the best-preserved reefs on the planet.

This eco-friendly resort in Southeast Sulawesi, Indonesia, has some of the most biodiverse reefs in the world. It's largely due to a unique "reef leasing" program that they implement in cooperation with local community, to protect the reefs from unsustainable fishing. The program's success is evident when you see the amount of fish on some of these sites; sometimes your view of the reef is obscured by fish! The dives are mostly wall dives, and the currents vary from mild to wild, and so do the dives. There are brisk drift drives and mellow pokey dives, and of course there is the unparalleled house reef, which is just steps away from your bungalow on the beach. It's best to follow the dive guides because their eyes seem to be calibrated to finding camouflaged creatures like ghost pipefish, crinoid shrimp, pygmy seahorses and nudibranchs. There's a reason we call Wakatobi "macro heaven."
