DESCRIPTION

The word "Hawaii" evokes images of grass skirts and hula-hoops, but as divers, we think of manta rays and lava tubes. Rising majestically out of the ocean floor, the volcanic Hawaiian Islands are relatively young on a geological scale, and they're isolated from other landmasses. The lava that flows out of the active volcanoes Kilauea and Mauna Loa constantly transforms the "Big Island" of Hawaii, and beneath the waves the ever-evolving lava tubes are an indication of how dynamic the topology is. The unique marine architecture is a rocky terrain blanketed in hard corals; it's bountiful with marine life. You'll notice the big boulders and underwater arches: they were chunks of lava just a few geological seconds ago, and they even look freshly made. The Kona coast is home to a group of mantas, while surgeonfish, butterflyfish and several species of eels find shelter on the hard coral reefs. This episode of ScubaCore is filmed aboard the Kona Aggressor, the only liveaboard dive boat that operates in this area.
