DESCRIPTION

As the sound of the steel drums playing off in the distance mixed with the gentle breeze and the whispering waves, we found ourselves in deep relaxation. Tobago is generally not on the radar screen of most divers, and that's probably one of the reasons why the reefs here are in such good shape. The nutrient-rich water from the Orinoco River flows here for a few months out of the year, and nourishes the colorful seascapes. The island of Trinidad is more industrialized, and we found out that Tobago is where Trinidadians go to relax! Tobago is a quiet respite from the mega-resorts of the Caribbean, and it has lovely rolling hills, pristine shorelines and a plethora of great dive sites all around the island.

This episode of ScubaCore is filmed aboard the Peter Hughes Wind Dancer liveaboard dive boat. Tobago's diving is atypical of the Caribbean – the nutrients in the water affect both the visibility and color, but they feed the reef and provide for a rich marine environment. You can "go with the flow" and see how the prevailing currents transform the numerous barrel sponges, check out the huge brain coral at Kelliston Drain, and tarpon at the Rose Bowl.
