Edgeplay - A Film About the Runaways
Documentaries Video: Edgeplay - A Film About the Runaways

DESCRIPTION
In 1975, a group of underage, teenaged girls, including then-unknown future rock stars Joan Jett and Lita Ford, got together to form the first ever all-female hard rock band, The Runaways. Signed almost immediately to a major record label deal, the band was dubbed "jailbait rock" by the press and became an overnight media sensation. "Edgeplay" chronicles the rise of the band, its hopes and dreams, and its eventual disintegration as the result of media belittling, in-fighting and drug use amidst rumors of verbal and emotional abuse by the band's management. Produced and directed by acclaimed filmmaker Victory Tischler-Blue, one of the Runaways' bass players, the film presents an unflinching insider's view of what it was like for six teenaged girls to be thrust into the limelight with minimal adult supervision, in a "sex, drugs and rock'n'roll" era hostile to female musicians. - New interviews with five members of the band, two of the band's former managers and two of the girls' mothers, combined with never-before-seen archival and behind-the-scenes footage of the band - Plus live performances, and interviews - The first self-told story of the band that influenced musicians from The Germs to Courtney Love.

Average Customer Review:
A sad story.
Jim
I wasn't a huge fan of the Runaways when they came on the scene but I did like Joan Jett and Lita Ford when their solo stuff took off. This is a documentry made by the bands second bass player Vicki Blue. What's sad about it is that these girls were just plain used. The stories of living on the road and very questionable behavior of Kim Fowley (is there a statute on statutory rape?) make you feel for these girls. They wanted to be stars and did whatever it took. Cherrie is somewhat surprising in her candor about having sex with Joan and Sandy. That's her saying it so go figure. Honestly, is that a surprise to anyone? All in all, not a bad film just a sad film.
